Self-employment can be a challenging and rewarding journey. From networking as an introverted extrovert to facing constant setbacks, staying grounded and motivated can feel like an uphill battle. In this article, I’ll share my journey of navigating self-employment using “key phrases for success” that have helped me keep moving forward even when the path wasn’t easy.
1. “Toes to Nose”
In the book The Art of Possibility by Rosamund and Benjamin Zander, the phrase “toes to nose” is used to help people regain control when they feel overwhelmed. In a whitewater rafting scenario, the phrase “toes to nose” serves as a reminder to keep your feet up, look for the boat, and reach for the ore—simple steps to ensure safety when it’s hard to think clearly. This concept translates well into self-employment.
When things get chaotic, you need a mental reminder that helps you refocus on what’s important. If you’re feeling out of control or “thrown out of the boat,” remember to focus on your core mission and pull yourself back to that central vision. This phrase helps ground me in my purpose, reminding me why I’m doing what I’m doing and what I need to do next.
2. “Don’t Look for Places—Be in Places”
Another key phrase that has transformed my approach is “Don’t look for places—be in places.” A coach friend shared this with me, and it’s been invaluable. It’s easy to get stuck waiting for the perfect opportunity or networking event, but sometimes you need to show up and make your own opportunities.
Instead of endlessly researching or searching for the ideal setting, I’ve learned to dive in. After relocating to San Carlos, I joined local Chambers of Commerce, Toastmasters, and even the local Lions Club. Putting myself out there, even when it’s uncomfortable, has opened doors I never would have encountered otherwise. Self-employment thrives on taking action rather than waiting for everything to fall into place.
3. “What’s More Important?”
When you’re navigating self-employment, fear can be paralyzing. Whether it’s fear of meeting new people, fear of failure, or fear of not knowing what’s next, it’s easy to stay in your comfort zone. But asking myself, “What’s more important?” helps me see beyond the fear.
When I’m at networking events, my immediate instinct is to avoid starting conversations. But by asking myself what’s more important—staying comfortable or building meaningful connections—I push myself to go beyond my comfort zone. I remind myself that my purpose, growth, and goals are more important than the discomfort I feel at that moment. This mental shift can make all the difference in building relationships, expanding my network, and growing my business.
4. “Do More”
Finally, I’ve adopted “Do more” from Alex Hormozi’s book 100 Million Dollar Leads. This simple phrase reinforces that results come from consistent input. The only way to achieve your goals is to put in the work, and often, that means doing more than you think is enough.
This isn’t about burning out; it’s about consistency and perseverance. I’ve seen time and again that effort breeds results, so “doing more” reminds me to keep pushing, even when it feels like things aren’t moving. Every small action contributes to the bigger picture.
