Insights from The Never Peak Project Podcast
In a recent episode of The Never Peak Project, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Paul Briley from Off the Comma Coaching. Our conversation, “Exploring Sobriety”, uncovered the profound impact of living an alcohol-free lifestyle and how it can contribute to greater clarity, resilience, and authenticity in both business and life. This blog post will recap the major takeaways from our discussion and offer insights that can help you reflect on your relationship with alcohol and its role in your personal and professional journey.

Understanding the Social Norms and Realities of Alcohol
One of the most compelling parts of our conversation was understanding how societal norms influence our relationship with alcohol. Paul shared how his early experiences growing up in a household where drinking was a regular occurrence and later joining social and work circles that emphasized “work hard, play hard” culture made alcohol a fixture in his life. This is a reality for many people, especially professionals who navigate social expectations in their personal and business lives.
Paul and I discussed how alcohol is uniquely positioned in society—it’s the only drug that people often feel they need to justify not using. The normalization of drinking is embedded in various aspects of our culture, from media portrayals to social rituals. This leads to judgments—whether self-imposed or external—that shape how we perceive our drinking habits.
Exploring Sobriety: Key Questions for Reflection
One of the most powerful parts of our discussion was identifying questions that people in the “gray area” of drinking should ask themselves. Here are the essential questions we distilled for those reflecting on their relationship with alcohol:
- What role does alcohol play in my life, and am I drinking out of habit or choice?
- How do I feel emotionally and physically after drinking, and what are the short- and long-term consequences for me?
- What would I gain or lose by taking a break from drinking, and is it truly serving me in a positive way?
- Have I ever stopped drinking before, and how did that experience impact me?
- Am I motivated to make changes for my well-being, and what support would I need to succeed?
These questions are a starting point for those who, like “Tamara,” the persona we created for the podcast, may be reevaluating their relationship with alcohol. Whether you’re a social drinker or someone who’s just beginning to question the impact of drinking on your life, honest reflection is crucial.
Exploring Sobriety as an Empowerment Tool for Leaders
Paul emphasized that the decision to live alcohol-free isn’t about imposing judgment or advocating a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s about exploring whether your current habits align with your goals and well-being. For entrepreneurs and leaders, sobriety can become a pathway to heightened clarity, better decision-making, and more authentic leadership.
As we discussed, leaders often face immense pressure and responsibilities. Some may turn to alcohol as a way to decompress, which, over time, can blur the lines between choice and dependence. By recognizing this, leaders can explore new ways to manage stress that align with their highest potential.
Taking Action: Where to Start
If you’re exploring sobriety, Paul suggested starting with a simple step: take a break. Set a period, such as 30 days, to step back from drinking and observe the effects. This isn’t about committing to permanent sobriety immediately but about gathering information and understanding how your body and mind respond. Journaling your thoughts and observations can be particularly insightful during this period.
Building a Support System
A key theme in our conversation was the importance of community and support. Whether it’s joining groups like The Sober Club, engaging in Facebook communities, or connecting with friends who share similar goals, having people to lean on is vital. Paul stressed that while a spouse or close friends who still drink can be supportive, they may not fully understand the experience of reevaluating or changing your relationship with alcohol. Engaging with people who have been there can make all the difference.
Final Thoughts: Making Empowered Decisions
Paul’s insights reiterated that the choice to live alcohol-free or to redefine your relationship with alcohol is deeply personal. It requires reflection, honesty, and often a willingness to step outside societal norms. The real power lies in making decisions that align with your values, goals, and well-being.
