Networking Tips: 4 Steps to Build Lasting Connections

Networking events can be intimidating, especially if you’re new to an area or an industry. But these events are one of the best ways to create connections that genuinely matter, and I’ve discovered a few simple steps to make them work for you. Here’s some networking tips to enhance your next experience:

1. Show Up (Even If It’s Uncomfortable)

The first of our networking tips is simple: be present. It’s easy to talk ourselves out of going to an event, especially if we’re worried about feeling out of place or if we’re not sure we’ll find the “right” people there. But, as I always say, “Don’t look for places—be in places.” Every networking event is an opportunity to meet new people, gain insights, and even learn something valuable about yourself. Worst case? You leave early. Best case? You make connections that can change everything.


2. Define Your Purpose

When you walk into a room with a purpose, it guides everything you do. Are you here to meet 5 new people? Learn about a specific industry? Whatever it is, define it before you arrive. For me, knowing my “why” helps keep me focused when conversations get tough or when I’m feeling a bit out of place. Having a clear purpose makes it easier to start conversations, approach new people, and ultimately leave the event feeling accomplished.

3. Engage in Genuine Conversations

People can tell if you’re there to “sell.” Instead, focus on forming real connections. A great tip I learned is to use the “Present, Past, Future” formula: Ask what someone does now, what led them to this point, and what their future goals are. This keeps the conversation flowing naturally, and you’ll often discover fascinating backstories. Plus, when you’re genuinely curious, people are more likely to open up, creating a meaningful exchange.

Framework for the Present, Past, Future Format:

  1. Present: Ask about their current role or focus.
    • “What are you working on now?” or “What’s your current role?”
    • Listen carefully, show curiosity, and find common ground.
  2. Past: Learn about their background and how they got to where they are now.
    • “How did you get into this field?” or “What led you to where you are today?”
    • Look for opportunities to connect on shared experiences or values.
  3. Future: Discover their goals, aspirations, or upcoming projects.
    • “What’s next for you?” or “What are you looking forward to in the next year?”
    • This lets them share more about their vision, offering further ways to support or collaborate.

PRO TIP: Ask for Intros: Don’t hesitate to ask, “Is there anyone else here I should connect with?” It’s a friendly way to meet more people.


4. Follow Up After the Event

These networking tips mean nothing if you do nothing with the connections you make.

The key to successful networking isn’t just making contacts; it’s maintaining them. After each event, send a quick follow-up message. Remind them of something specific you talked about, and suggest a one-on-one chat if they’re open to it. For me, these follow-ups often lead to more in-depth conversations and a stronger relationship over time.

Following up after a networking event solidifies your connection and shows your interest in building a relationship.

Script 1: General Follow-Up

Subject Line: Great connecting with you at [Event Name]!

Hi [Name],

I enjoyed meeting you at [Event Name] and hearing about your work in [Their Industry or Role]. It was refreshing to connect with someone who’s passionate about [Something Specific You Discussed].

If you’re open to it, I’d love to continue our conversation and explore ways we could support each other. Feel free to let me know if a quick coffee chat would work for you!
